Overview

The Customer Technical Trainer is responsible for designing, developing, and delivering training programs for customer heavy equipment technicians on Caterpillar heavy equipment. This role ensures that all trainees acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to maintain heavy equipment safely and efficiently, adhering to company and industry standards.

Responsibilities

Training Program Development: 

  • Contributes to a positive work environment and promotes the vision, mission and values of BMC.
  • Completes all job responsibilities in a safe manner, promotes and champions a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Design and develop comprehensive training programs for BMC customer technicians including monthly offered courses and dedicated apprenticeship offerings.  
  • Update training materials regularly to incorporate new equipment, technologies, and best practices. 

 Training Coordination/Delivery: 

  • Develop yearly customer offerings including dedicated apprenticeships. 
  • Coordinate the enrollment of customer technicians using the Learning Management System. 
  • Conduct hands-on and classroom training sessions with customer technicians. 
  • Provide practical demonstrations on the diagnostics, maintenance, and repair of heavy equipment. 
  • Invoice customer training.  
  • Enroll and assign training in the Caterpillar Dealer Performance Center. 

 Assessment and Evaluation: 

  • Report to customers monthly the progress of apprentice technicians including e-learning and in-person class performance. 
  • Provide constructive feedback and coaching to trainees to improve their skills. 
  • Maintain accurate training records and documentation for all trainees. 
  • Prepare and present training reports to management. 

 Safety and Compliance: 

  • Ensure all training programs comply with safety regulations and company policies. 
  • Promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement. 
  • Work closely with the customers to identify training needs and gaps for their technicians. 
  • Collaborate with equipment manufacturers and vendors to stay updated on new technologies and training methods. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associate or bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a related discipline preferred. 
  • Caterpillar CIAP certification preferred. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing Caterpillar heavy equipment.
  • Previous experience in a training or instructional role required.
  • In-depth knowledge of Caterpillar heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, bulldozers, loaders).
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with no more than one citation in the previous 36 months.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to design and implement effective training programs.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in using training software and tools.

Working Conditions

  • The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside (non-climate controlled) and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions throughout the year traveling to branch office.
  • Overnight stays & business travel by car and other modes of transportation required.
  • Position requires employee to be physically present at job site location.
  • Required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to injury and/or hazardous materials.
  • Job requires standing, stooping, squatting, pushing, pulling, twisting, turning, lifting, seeing, reading, and writing to complete job responsibilities.
  • Use of computer and other forms of technology to complete job responsibilities.
